Catch-Up Bookkeeping
If your books are months or years behind, we clean them up, organize everything, and bring your financials current so you can move forward with numbers you trust.
What This Is
Catch-up bookkeeping is exactly what it sounds like. If your books are three months behind, a year behind, or even further back than that, we go through everything, categorize transactions, reconcile bank and credit card accounts, and bring your financials up to date. The end result is a clean set of books that accurately reflects what happened in your business during that period.
This isn’t a quick pass where we dump everything into “miscellaneous.” We dig into bank statements, receipts, invoices, and any records you have to make sure each transaction lands in the right place. When we’re done, your books are ready for tax prep, for lender requests, or simply for you to finally understand where your money has been going.
What Gets Cleaned Up
What Gets Cleaned Up
Uncategorized and miscategorized transactions. Unreconciled bank and credit card accounts. Missing entries for cash transactions, loans, or transfers. Duplicate records. Messy chart of accounts. Whatever state your QuickBooks file or spreadsheets are in, we sort through it and get it right.
How the Process Works
How the Process Works
We start by reviewing what you have and identifying how far behind things are. Then we gather bank statements, credit card statements, and whatever documentation is available. We work through each month systematically, reconciling as we go. You get a clean, accurate file and a clear picture of where things stand.
Why This Matters
Falling behind on bookkeeping is one of the most common problems small business owners face. It usually starts small. You skip a month because things are busy. Then another month passes. Before long it feels too overwhelming to tackle, so you keep putting it off. Meanwhile, you’re making financial decisions without knowing your actual numbers, and tax season becomes a source of real stress.
The longer books stay behind, the harder it gets. Receipts go missing. You forget what certain transactions were for. Your accountant or tax preparer has to work with incomplete information, which often means you pay more in taxes than you should or miss deductions you were entitled to. It also means you can’t answer basic questions about your business, like whether you actually made money last quarter.
Tax Season Scramble
Tax Season Scramble
When your books are behind and tax deadlines arrive, everything becomes urgent. Your tax preparer needs financials. You’re digging through shoeboxes and bank statements trying to piece things together in a week. The result is often rushed, inaccurate, and stressful. Sometimes it means filing extensions, which just delays the problem.
Decisions Without Data
Decisions Without Data
Can you afford to hire someone? Should you take on that equipment loan? Is your pricing actually covering your costs? Without current books, these questions get answered with gut feelings instead of real numbers. That works until it doesn’t, and by the time you realize something is off, the damage is already done.
What Changes
Once your books are caught up, you have a clear financial picture for the first time in however long it’s been. You can see what you earned, what you spent, and where your money went. Your tax preparer gets clean financials instead of a pile of bank statements. And you can finally start making decisions based on actual numbers rather than guesses.
For many of our clients, the catch-up project is the starting point for staying on top of their books going forward. Once you see what a difference clean financials make, keeping them current stops feeling like a chore and starts feeling like something you actually want. We can help with that ongoing piece too through our full-service bookkeeping, but there’s no pressure. The first step is just getting current.
A Fresh Starting Point
A Fresh Starting Point
Instead of dragging months of messy books into the future, you get a clean break. Everything prior is organized and accurate. From here, you can maintain your books yourself, have us handle them on an ongoing basis, or work with any bookkeeper or accountant knowing that your historical records are solid.
Peace of Mind at Tax Time
Peace of Mind at Tax Time
When your financials are current and accurate, tax season stops being an emergency. Your tax preparer gets what they need without the back-and-forth. You’re not guessing at deductions or scrambling for documentation. And you’re far less likely to overpay or trigger issues with incomplete reporting.
